Removing Win2K Server from domain.

By billytra ·
In my company, there are 2 domains. One domain is the NT4.0 domain with PDC,BDC and other member servers. The other domain is a Win2K server domain, in this domain there is ONLY ONE (1) Win2K server and this is the DC of this particular domain....(no other DCs). I have been asked to demote this Win2K as a DC from its domain...(and basicly decomissioned the Win2K domain) and JOIN this Win2K server (as a member) to the other existing NT4.0 domain. The purpose of this is to a a SINGLE domain only and for the ease of adminstration.

Can this be done ? and how can I achieve this please. ?

Thank you
Jim

It can definitely be done. Keep in mind though, that everything that pertains to the domain (users, computers, etc.,)will be deleted as well. Once you are sure that you have everything ready for the demotion, start with the demotion, reboot, then you will be logging on locally. You can then make all the necessary changes to join the existing domain. Clients that used this domain will also have to be joined to the existing domain. You should back everything up just to make sure you CYA if something does happen.

Good luck,

Norm

If I understood your question correctly you want to remove the last (because it the only) DC.

I'd do the following:

1. Backup first !

2. Make sure all users of the domain are logged out.

3. Start 'dcpromo' from a command line prompt.

4. Follow the instructions of the assistant that pops up.
