Removing Windows 95

By Randy_Y ·
I would like to remove Windows 95 form a Packard Bell PB160 computer. The install file was removed by someone before I got the computer. I would like to install Windows 98SE. I do not have an upgrade program, I was given a new complete version and it will not allow me to install it over the OS ssytem. I do not have any of the original programs that were loaded onto this computer, therefore I hesitate to Wipe out the hard drive and start over.

You can do this by creating a boot disk with CD-ROM support, booting up on that disk, then running setup.exe (which is on the CD-ROM) from the DOS prompt.

Copy the win98 cab files to a folder on the hard drive. Rename win.com in the c:\windows folder to win.old. Reboot. Computer will not boot to windows but will go to a DOS prompt saying "win.com not found". cd to the folder where you put the win98 cab files and type setup. This avoids the setup error saying an operating system already exists on the computer. I should point out that this type of upgrade is not as stable as a fresh install.

If you install win98se and do not reinstall your current programs, many of the programs will not work anyway. The above answers are fine for placing win98se on your system. But how will the programs get into the win98 registry? How will they work?

Answer 2 may work for you.
If not, I recently saw a posting on how to install 98 over 95. I think it was more involved than what #2 gave you.

Look at www.bootdisk.com
or www.aumha.org

For more information, and links

Be cautious as you proceed, if you lose the registry, you will have problems with the running installed programs.
It would be a good idea to back up the registry before you proceed.

Oh, at one time the computer geeks www.compgeeks.com
had some PB restore disks for $0.49.
This might have most of the software you need on it.

Before you do a dang thing you need to get the
drivers for all of your devices. Packard Bell is
not supported in the US any more. There is a
web site that has drivers and things but I
would be sure I had them before I started.

As you probably know by know you have an
OEM version of 98. You cannot install it over
an existing OS.

I would not do an upgrade or install 98 over
95. The reminates of the old OS will cause you
problems in the long run.

Get your drivers, formatyour harddrive and
install 98. If you can remove all cards except
the video card. Once you get the os onboard
add the cards one at a time. This will keep you
from running in circles.

Good Luck Lee
