Removing Windows 98 login screen

I am having problems removing a login screen on windows 98. the computer is set to a domain that the computer is not logging into anymore. I got the computer from a friend and the settings are for his workplace. I am also having problems getting into safe mode to look at the network settings. I click on ‘cancel’ on the login screen and it it asking me for the domain but there is no domain. Any ideas on how to get rid of the screen and network attributes, would be great.
