removing windows.old files from windows vista

By talkats ·
I upgraded Windows home edition to Windows Vista business. In the process Windows backed-up the old windows installation into the c:\windows.old folder with all the previously installed programs compacted into 20GB of space. I want to reclaim this space by deleting this folder, but I get a "Permissions denied" message. How do I get this wasted space back into good use?

Check the security permissions

First of all if you deleted the folder you will not be able to rollback to previous version.

To delete the folder change the security settings on the folder by adding your user to the list with full control, you should use an admin account.
Usually you will find only System account in the list.

click on the START button, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, and then click on DISK CLEANUP, this will scan everything. Be sure to select the drive with the windows.old folder (assuming the C: drive). After the scanning is complete check off the appropriate selection and begin removing. After the removal is complete I would recommend defragging the hdd.

Thanks. It was easy. Now, I also have two copies of Windows in two of my hard drives, D and G, along with info I do not want to lose. Any way of deleting those?By the way I have Windows7 ultimate running.

Thank You.
