Renaming “Documents and Settings\…\My Documents”

by davionics . Updated 18 years, 3 months ago

As a developer I do a lot of work in the command prompt window and often end up with path names one to two hundred characters long.

It has long been my dream to shorten the names of some of the system folders and remove the embedded spaces but I’m wondering if XP would allow that.

Since XP doesn’t support symbolic (or any real)links, the only fix I can think of is to rename some of the system folders. For instance, I’d love to rename “Documents and Settings” to “DOCS”, “My Programs” to “PROGS”, and “My Documents” to “MyDocs”.

I suppose I’d also have to go into the registry and replace those path names there, although I don’t think regedit or regedt32 support search-and-replace. And even then, I don’t know if XP or 3rd party software is hard-coded to use the original paths.

Has anyone actually tried this or has any insight into the feasibility of doing this?

I’d much apprecite any feedback you may have.

Dave
