    Renaming domain for DNS/AD

    Locked

    by johnj ·

When we installed our new Win2K server last summer, we named our local domain stfrancishighschool.com. However, we ran into a DNS glitch since our website’s domain name is also stfrancishighschool.com. (We are hosted offsite.) We fixed that problem, but now I would like to rename our local domain (to something like local.stfrancishighschool.com) to prepare for full implementation of AD.
How do I do it? Can I just reconfigure DNS on the servers, or do I need to reinstall Win2K?
    Thanks.

The only way to rename an Active Directory (AD)domain is to recreate the domain from scratch.

You don’t need to reinstall Win2K to do this. All you need to do is run dcpromo. This process deletes AD, and if run on the only Domain Controller in the domain, it also deletes the domain.

Upon reboot, run dcpromo again. This will reinstall AD and lead you through the process of creating a new AD domain.

        I forgot to add:

Make sure you are running a local DNS server that is hosting a DNS zone with the same name as your intended AD domain name.
