Renaming the NT 40 domain

my NT 4 domain name abc_800_lan and would like to upgrade from NT 4 to windows 2000 but after research the current domain naming convention doesn’t fit windows 2000 naming convention, does anyone have this experience in the pass, please advice what is the bestway to do this.
