Renistall W Millennium

Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion XL844 that needs to have W ME reinstalled. Can I run setup off the cd and not loose data, similar to what W95 and 98 let you do. Also where are the setup files in the cabs. I had to rename vmm32.vxd to vmm32.old and now reinstall ME.
