Repairing a IBM Think Pad I series

By kernow_boy ·
Hi I've a 4 year old IBM Think Pad I series laptop, I've damaged the power socket to the motherboard, I cannot remove the case in order replace the socket, any body know where I can get a service manual or a description of how to take the case apart.
Help the battery is flat and I need to get data off the hard disk

The only guarantied way is to go to an IBM authorized dealer.
IBM doesn't handle the service manual over to 3th party's. You could try a general repair shop, but if the data is crucial I would suggest to search for the nearest IBM authorized dealer near you.

Im loathed to go to an IBM dealer to pay for a job that will take 30 seconds and cost pence for the parts.

I haven't a clue personally, but there is a site focused on Think Pads that probably can supply the answer. http://tinyurl.com/3ahug

Once taken the battery off, you should be able to see some screws to help you open the computer.

Which ThinkPad version? 600E? Another one? Please post, so we can lookup the manual for that one.

Helps if I read the whole question, eh?
So, the I series. Ok. What I Series Thinkpad model?
I found the ThinkPad 1400, 1500 (2611) - Hardware Maintenance Manual here

What you need (if your model is a 1400 or 1500) is probably here. If not, please post.

You can find the service manuals to IBM Thinkpads and other IBM Computers at this url

http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/cdt/hmm.html

remove spaces that occur during copy and paste

This is the IBM PC Tech Library. Once you find the model click on the pdf format link.

You will find replace instructions in the FRU section.

I hope this helps.
