repairing XP registry

By pchlp ·
Does anyone know how to repair the registry on XP Home edition. This is brand new laptop but comes up with errors when installing Office 2000 and other programs.
Can you reinstall XP like Win98 (over top of itself), or do you have to totally reinstall the OP.

With XP Home Edition you can run the repair utility. Just insert the XP home Edition CD and reboot....on boot run the setup program and run the repair utility. Once you finish the repair process the machine will reboot. Upon logon, backup your registry and setup the System Restore utility so save yourself headaches in the future.

You need to either use a registry tool such as Fix-It fron OnTrack, or follow the repair procedure.
(it is a good idea to create "restore points" for your XP system)

If you re-install XP to the same folder, the install wipes out the folder, and then re-installs XP.
As a result, you loose all installed software, and custom settings.
