Repeated Freeze After New W2k Install

By nobby57 ·
Machine in question is HP Vectra VA PPro 200MHz with ample HD space and 160MB memory. Ran fine with NT4 SP6 installed but after HDD upgrade (recognized, no problems) I installed Windows 2000 Pro. Install seemed to go normally (if slowly) but on bootit freezes every time while trying to load user information after logon. Freeze takes place with a blank blue screen with the curser and hourglass -- part of hourglass is cut off -- and hard drive light on steadily. Will complete logon and start up while in safe mode but tends to crash apps (such as device manager or event viewer) or, once, froze the whole system. I took out the NIC since this is currently a standalone unit, checked the other cards, checked connections, and reinstalled OS afterremoving the previous partition and making a fresh one. Same problem. There is no BIOS upgrade for this machine, so far as I can tell. In safe mode, no resource such as device manager reports any problems. IRQs seem ok, ditto DMA lines. Is it too old to run this software? Or is something else wrong? Thanks for any ideas!

You have an old computer with a very little memory. Upgrade your memory and reinstall Win2K.

The memory is okay -- we run W2K on many machines with only 128 MB RAM ; but your megahertz is too slow for this OS -- our minimum is PII 333 MHz. And these are being replaced with newer machines.

W2K should run, abeit extremely slowly,on your machine.

There's probably some conflicting device or hardware stability issue. The BIOS update for W2K is important on older machines -- and if non is available, then I'd recommend replacing that systemboard, CPU and RAM and maybe eventhe power supply (depending on how many drives/cd-roms etc. are being used on this system).

it`s because of your processor frequency. 160 MB Ram is more than enought. the best way if possible to upgrade your PC with a new mainboard and new processor.
