Replace a W2K DC by backup/restore

by vinczetamas . Updated 18 years, 8 months ago

Hi!
I have the following task to do:
We have a w2k domain controled by a w2k DC.
There are 50 clients XP SP2.
At the clients for all users there are mapped drives to the DC, where they store personal data. There are NO roaming user profiles.
We bought a new server with w2k3 OS. It is bigger, faster, etc…
I want to replace the old server with the new one without touching the clients if possible. Then I want to use the old DC as a DC for safety reasons.
The problem is that the network shares for printers and folders point to the old PDC name. So the new server must use the same name.

I try to do the following, correct me if it can’t be done:
I install the W2K on the new server. Make a backup of the old server and will try to restore it to the new one (when the old one is not on the network). Then I upgrade the new server to W2K3.
Is it possible to change the name of the new server and make a virtual server in DNS, or will the System State recovery set it back to the old server name?
Please help me in this task.

Thank you
