Replaced motherboard, now HDD continually reboots

by gillespie.amanda.spamfilter . Updated 18 years, 1 month ago

I’ve upgraded my desktop – essentially put my old hard drive into a brand new machine (new MOBO, etc). I followed the instructions from Microsoft on upgrading/repairing an XP installation with a new motherboard.

The XP repair gets to a certain point, then the hard drive reboots. I can’t get into Safe Mode. I can’t get beyond this section. When I boot from CD again, I get an error saying that Windows was in the middle of a repair, do I want to continue – and it gets to the same point and then reboots. Lather rinse repeat.

I have tried a different hard drive in this new machine (same HDD brand and model, different capacity), and this works perfectly, so I know the MOBO installation is working fine. The only variable is the hard drive.

Any suggestions?

For interest:
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H (onboard graphics, sound, LAN, etc)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2, 5000+
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800 MHz
