Replacing the PDC

By jchouse18 ·
I have been given the task of replacing our existing PDC with a new PDC. My question is what is the best way to do this with very minimal downtime. The existing PDC is hosting all of our user home directories, print server, DHCP server and WINS server. Thanks.

Replacing the PDC

by Iulian Costache In reply to Replacing the PDC

install the new pdc (NPDC) as a backup for the first pdc (FPDC) then promote the NPDC to a primary domain controller. The FPDC becomes automatically BDC, transfer of existing users and computers will be made automatically.
As for the FPDC, do what you want with it.
Be sure to recreate the home directories and profiles directories. Test for a while.
This way you do not have any downtime.
Good luck!
