Replacing Windows 2003 DC to Windows 2008 DC

by dpiper26 . Updated 17 years, 8 months ago

I had a couple of questions I hope someone could answer for me.

We currently have 2 Windows 2003 server DC’s in our network. Our primary DC is old, so we purchased another DC with Windows 2008 server on it.

I know that I need to do a forest/domain prep to prepare the network for the Windows 2008 server. Should this be done on the DC that I’m replacing or our secondary Windows 2003 DC or does it matter?

I would also like to use the same computer name the old DC currently has. Any recommendations as to the steps I should take, so everything goes smoothly? Would giving the new DC any name for the time being, then just rename to old DC name after I demote it?

Is there any good documentation out there for this type of job?

Thank You!!!!
