Replacing Windows Media Centre Edition OS with Windows XP Professional

by jack_barde . Updated 19 years, 2 months ago

Hi,
I recently (Feb 2007) purchased an Inspiron I 6400 laptop (Intel Core 2 CPU 7200 @ 2 Ghz) from Dell Computers. The laptop was delivered to me with Windows XP Media Centre OS (version 2002, service pack 2). I intend using the laptop for audio and midi recording, and need to connect the M-Audio Axiom keyboard controller and the Focusrite Saffire audio interface to it. I would also need to run programs such as Cubase LE OEM, Reason, Hypersonic, etc. I have information (www.Sweetwater.com / www.M-audio.com) that the aforementioned products are incompatible with WMCE OS, and that there is an industry wide lack of support for WMCE as far as pro audio recording equipment and software is concerned.
Dell Computers has now sent me a Windows XP Professional reinstallation CD (service pack 2).
The CD label has ?Already installed on your computer? / ? The software is already installed on your computer. Only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer. This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers? / ? For distribution only with a new Dell PC?.
Can I use this CD to replace the WMCE OS on my laptop with Windows XP Professional? Are there any risks involved? What are the steps to follow, and are there any important points to note?
I also have the WMCE OS DVD that was included originally with the laptop. This DVD too has all the above info ?Already installed on your computer??..For distribution with a new Dell PC?.
I am a musician, and am not too conversant with technical details and trouble shooting. Any guidance and advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance?..
