Replacing Xp with Win2k - Toshiba Laptop

By Rschleg1 ·
I have a new Toshiba 1115-S103 laptop that came pre-loaded with Win Xp. The machine is a 1.5 Ghz Celeron with 256 Meg RAM. I have purchased a copy of Win 2K Pro and want to wipe the hard drive and load Win2K. I am trying to find out if I will experience issues with the Toshiba bios and/or drivers if I make the switch. I am not concerned with losing the other Toshiba clutter such as operating manuals etc on the Toshiba pre-load but I am concerned about getting the integrated modem and lan hardware working properly. Toshiba technical support has been of little help with this as they seem inscensed that I don't want their pre load stuff. I am looking for tips from someone who has made this operating system change on a laptop and preferrablya Toshiba.

Replacing Xp with Win2k - Toshiba Laptop

I'll caveat this by saying I haven't done this on a Toshiba.

WinXP essentially built on the Win2K kernel. Most Win2K drivers will work with WinXP (although the reverse is not necessarily true).

Looking trough the downloads page for your computer, on the Toshiba website, it appears that Toshiba drivers for the integrated modem and NIC work for both Win2K and WinXP.

Given that this is the case, if Win2K doesn't automatically recognize this hardware, you should be able to use the driversthat come on any Toshiba Drivers CD. Or to be safe, download them ahead of time so you have the latest drivers available.

And since your present BIOS works with WinXP, it is MOST unlikely that it won't work with earlier operating systems. BIOSis not OS specific (although BIOS updates may be necessary for a computer to work properly with NEWER operating systems as they become available).

Hope this helps set your mind at ease.

This will work fine.
The way to do it is:

Simply change the Laptop to load from CD Rom in the BIOS and then power on the laptop.
Format the laptop and then re-install win 2k.
I deleted all partitions back to the fixed disk then created new partitions.
Warning: You will lose all the tochisba disk utilities etc they use to troubleshoot your laptop in the event of System failure so they will tell you you must have THEIR operating system on it if in the future you should ever need Tech support.
