Replicated PDC

By tdigirolamo ·
I am setting up a replicated domain in a lab to test a Windows 2000 Active Directory migration. I've loaded a PDC with all the same configuration settings as my true PDC. I'm looking for a way to copy the user accounts and DNS information from my real PDC and load the info into my lab PDC. WINS and DHCP both provide a way to back up thier information, but I can't find that with DNS or user accounts.

DNS, DHCP and WINS all save their databases to specific files. Domain configuration information (user accounts, shares, permissions, etc.) are spread across several files which by design aren't readily accessible.

One choice would be to clone the hard drive from your PDC.

The better way to do what you want to do is as follows:

1. Create your lab server as a BDC and join it to your production network. Force synchronization between the PDC and the BDC.
2. Remove the BDC from the network.
3. Set up the BDC in your lab environment (not connected in any way with your production network).
4. Promote the BDC to PDC (Since it won't see any other PDCs in its view, it will allow you to do this).
5. Conduct your test migration.Hope this helps.

Well, I think you want to run ADDUSERS.EXE from the Resource Kit. With ADDUSERS, you can export your current user list from your NT PDC to a comma-delimited text file, then import the file into your Win2K Domain Controller. There is another tool in the Kit called MOVEUSER.EXE, but that does just like its name says, it moves the users FROM one domain to another. You don't want to do that.
Please try Technet article Q301940 for suggestions/syntax for moving/copying objects from one domain to another:

As for the DNS entries, just set up the Win2K DNS server (which will be your DC I take it) to do a Zone Transfer from your NT4 DNS server to itself. Then that way, you will have the DNS records without having to transfer the files around.
Here is a Technet article on how to do the zone transfer from NT4 to Win2K, article #Q300468:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300468

To copy the WINS database, try this Technet article, Q193820:
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q193820
(please remove any spaces)

To copy DHCP database, try this Technet article, Q130642:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q130642
(please remove any spaces)

hope this helps
