Resize OS Partition
Lockedby joe · about 14 years, 3 months ago
Doing some work for a company who bought a server from Dell loaded with SBS 2003. Dell configured the system partition to 20gb and the data partition to 90gb. Problem is the system partition keeps getting low disk space warnings. Is there a way to resize the partitions to say 40 and 70? **Side note they also are using Raid 1 software replication through windows with dynamic disks. I’ve heard to many horror stories to trust partition magic.

I just have Acronis True Image 11 Home edition. And to me this does what it says on the box. If you need more info on this software go into the support section and just ask.

Dynamic

Will acronis work with dynamic discs? And I’m assuming I’d have to break the software mirroring before doing any disk partition work correct?

Resize SBS system partition without reboot – detailed Tutorial
by saraline · about 12 years, 10 months ago
In reply to dynamic
“Low disk space” warning will pop out when the system is out of space. To solve this problem, you may follow this detailed guide:
http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/extend-sbs-2003-server.htm
the system on the dynamic disk can not be extended. Any third party software cannot extend the dynamic disk at the meantime, including acronis, you may find it claims Acronis does not support dynamic disk on its website.
There is a safe way to resize the OS on dynamic disk indirectly : http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/resize-dynamic-disk.htm

to check what is being stored on the system partition and redirect some of the programs/storage to another partition. A server shouldn’t really need a large system drive.

stored

What I saw is the obvious windows logs. Exchange is set to store on the system partition even though they still POP all their mail at the desktop level from their ISP. The server does not handle mail. User document redirect is set to use the data partition. Is there anything else i could check. I think WSUS stores to the system partition as well.
Any ideas would be great, thanks a million.

Not hard to solve

In reply to Resize OS Partition
If the partitions are on dynamic disk, it is a bit inconvenient, as there is no SW that can resize dynamic disk directly, but you can copy the dynamic volume to a basic disk to resize and it is safe, see this article http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/resize-dynamic-disk.htm
If the partition is on hardware raid virtual disk, it is easy to solve, check http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/partition-raid-windows-server.htm I think the resource on this site are quite good

Resize dynamic disk
by enemyever · about 12 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Not hard to solve
Since you wanna to extend dynamic system volume without losing any data, you need to convert dynamic volume disk to basic with Dynamic Disk Converter firstly.
Then extend the system volume on the basic disk via third party partition software like Partition Assistant Server Edition.
Details at http://www.dynamic-disk.com/convert-dynamic-disk-to-basic.html

resize dynamic disk directly

In reply to Resize OS Partition
this thread was quite old, and just noticed the solutions provided two or three years ago are just out of date, actually, Now you can resize dynamic disk directly, no need to convert dynamic disk to basic one first as they mentioned above. quite helpful and a big step in this technolog, see how to here and hope it is helpful:
