Resolving DNS Names to a URL

By rguess ·
I am using NT 4.0 for a DNS server. Does anyone now how to resolve a name to a url instead of an ip address? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Resolving DNS Names to a URL

So, you have an IP address and you want to get the URL for it, and you want your DNS server to do the lookup?
Then you need a "Reverse Lookup Zone" in your DNS setup. This is also a PTR record. It has an IP address, and it will give you the URL.
There is a lot out there on reverse lookup zones, but I found a Technet article on them, article #Q164213:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2fsearch%2fviewDoc.aspx%3fdocID%3dKC.Q164213
(please remove any spaces)

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Joseph's answer is a good one if you want a translation from IP address to URL but looking at your question, I'd say you actually want a translation from NetBIOS name to URL.

I cant imagine what else you could mean because a DNS name essentially IS a URL (minus the frilly bits you may associate with URLs like "http://" of course)

What do you need it for? I mean would it be useful to you to have a .BAT file or specifically written application that does the translation?

Or do you need it integrated into something?

Let us know.
Cheers,
Tim.

What I am trying to is resolve one url to another as in virtual hosting. I want for example (www.domainname.com) to resolve to (www.website.com/domainname).
