    Resource Sharing in mixed environment

    Locked

    by gustavo_betancourt ·

I am running a NetWare 5.1 network with Windows 2000 and Windows 9x clients. If I want to share a resource from a Windows 2000 professional client (ie. printer), I can connect to it if I use another Windows 2000 computer. If I try to connect to it with a Windows 98 client, I get the following prompt: “You must supply a password to make this connection:
Resource: \\\IPC$” I try to enter as many passwords as I know, but it doesn’t work. The weird thing is that I was able to connect to it once from a Windows 9x machine, but for some odd reason I lost that capability now. Please help.

You get the InterProcess share password box (IPC$) when there is a SID conflict going to NT/2000.
The 2000 networked printer can only be used by valid NT/2000 user accounts.
To get this to work, build a new user on the Win9x clients that exactlymatches a valid NT/2000 account. The same login name and password. Log into the Win9x box with this account.
Then try to attach to the 2000 printer.

      Hope this helps.

Joseph, thank you for your answer. I am able to connect to the computer, but am not able to see the printer if I log in from a Windows 98 machine, even though I installed the additional drivers and gave the user enough rights. Please advise if possible.

Do you have netbeui installed on the two puters? Give that a try since it is not a network printer with it’s own IP address it is relying on a netbios share name.
      Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. I tried adding NetBeui, but I still run into the same situation (I can see the computer and a regular folder that I shared, but cannot see the printer object from Windows 98).
