I’m current looking at a network issue that has got me stumpped.
Users are complaining that their network drive mapps are constantly dropping out, and that they are also denied access to resouces, including the local server (BDC) when they’re still logged onto the network.
The setup is as follows: The PDC is a NT4.0 server in one country, with serveral BDCs in other countries.
The office with the network issues has a NT4.0 spk5 BDC server.
All user PCs are win NT 4.0 machines with roaming profiles. Link to WAN is a 128k link.
Senario: User logs onto network and are able to see all resources on the local LAN and WAN. User leaves PC alone for mintues and comes back to work on PC. User has not touch PC between this time and find that they can’t access the mapped drive to the local BDC, but can see and access the mapped drive on another BDC in another city.
There are serveral different varations of what resouces the user can and cannot use. eg. can see mapped drive folders,but notaccess files or has opened document, leave PC and comes back to use PC again and finds that they can no longer access the document.
Have looked at: The LMHOSTS file. Tried pinning down port speed and duplex to 100full on the switch and NIC cards.
Have tried using NET USE command in a login script.
All have been tempry fixes.
The only way to get the user back onto the network is to get the user to log off/switch off PC and log back on. This some time takes several goes before user gains full access to network resources.
Have looked at LMHOST file,switch port and NIC card setting,replication between PDC/BDC.
