If it isn't getting past the POST screen before shutting down and restarting I would suggest you change the CMOS Battery. It is most likely flat.

When these batteries go flat all sorts of Screwy things happen and here it sounds as if there is no Primary Boot Device detected. Anyway it's a cheap fix for a lot of BIOS Problems and worth while trying first before doing anything else.

Depending on the Maker of the System/M'Board you may need to clear the BIOS after replacing the battery this is generally done by changing a jumper from 1-2 to 2-3 for a few seconds and then reseting the jumper back to 1-2. It will be in the manual the correct way to do things.

Just remember to remove the Mains Lead before you remove the battery as quite often they get dropped and can short out the M'Board and damage it. If you handle these batteries properly and don't actually touch the surfaces they can be quite slippery even the medical plastic forceps that I use will 50% of the time not hold a CMOS Battery until I get it out.

Hi

Also, the next time it boots, press and hold down the F8 key. A menu will be displayed and one of the options is to disable automatic restarting of the PC. This will also enable you to boot it into Safe Mode so you can run some diagnostics and check it.

Good luck

If you have the windows installation disk, you will be better off with reinstallation.
