I have a Pentium II 233 Mhz Pc with the following specifications-32 MB SD RAM, Intel 440LX motherboard with 512 KB LII cache, 4.3 GB Seagate Hard Disk, 200W Switch Mode Power Supply. In the last few days, my PC just restarts on it own without any apparent reason. It does not power off and then power on again but just restarts on its own just like when you explicitly hit Ctrl+Alt+Del The PC does not remain powered on for more than 5 minutes at a stretch without automatically restarting. In the 5minutes that it does stay powered on, it functions normally. What could be the problem??

The CPU may be overheating, check the fan on cpu to see if it is operating. The Power Supply could be the problem also, also check the fan their If the above does not fix run scan disk to check for any errors, and run the anti-virus to check for viruses, try disabling power management to see if it stops If problem persist then you will most likely have a motherboard problem
Were there any changes to the system just before the problem started happening? Do you have a battery backup or surge supressor on this machine? I would remove it temporarily to see if that's it. Then I would open the case and check and reseat all power connections. Reseat the RAM. If no improvement, replace power supply. If still a problem, remove option cards one at a time until it stops.
Are you using Internet Explorer when this happens. We had a similar problem and reinstalled IE, which fixed the problem. I also agree though that you need to run scandisk, a disk utility program, and check for viruses. Hope this helps.
I would agree with the cpu over heating with the older machines the cpu cooling fans either stop rotateing or the heat sink gets cloged and no air circultes through. if you replace the fan\heatsink dont forget to put a thermal transfer pad or zink oxide heat sink compound on it.
We had trouble with a dell rebooting on its own. Removed APM from the ctrl panel-system-device-system devices. Turned off all power management in bios and windows. This worked but was a patch not a fix. Reloaded windows 98 and the problem has disappeared.
