Restarting Windows

By gmoe13 ·
I installed a CD-R/RW drive and software which require driver on the Intel CA810 board for the W2K OS partitioned with Win98 OS. I reinstalled the W2K OS but when I try to restart my system it shuts down completely with no power light but I heard the fan. It will not restart from the power button it only starts after shutting down the surge protector switch. Any tools I can use to troubleshoot or is it something even simple than that?

you can try downgrading to windows 95/98 or windows 3.1! also, try resetting your bios settings to their defaults. That might be the reason your pc is acting funny. and did you check your cmos battery?

Plug your PC directly to the wall outlet to check the surge proctertor. Also, double check the the new device connections. Is it compatible to W2K OS? If not, you need a new device driver from the manufacturer. Is your PC working properly before installing the CD writer? Just wondering why you reinstalled your W2K OS after.

Try to remove the CDR drive and see if the computer boots up ok. If it doesn't then you messed up your windows partitions so boot from a system disk and fix that first. After that connect up the CDR to the secondary hard drive cable (if it is an IDECDR)and try again. And make sure it is the second IDE cable, Not the primary since you may have a conflict with the controler.

In the past when I'd run into a computer that wouldn't start using the power button, I would clean the button and jumper the power supply. It only works on ATX power supplies and it must be connect to the motherboard. I'm not sure what power supply you have but if it's an ATX supply try using a small jumper wire in the mother board connector of the power supply. Jumper the 14th and 15th which should be the black and green wire. The power should come on indicating the power supply is ok, then you should look at the switch itself....
