Restore A Complete Server to another

By djrampant ·
Hopefully this will be an easy one for you guys but as I've never done it before I thought i'd ask first.

I have a citrix server here that we have done a complete backup of including system state, and now I need to restore it to another machine.

Is it as simple as building a basic windows 2000 server and then restoring the entire backup onto the new server?

Thanks

Daz

Is the hardware exactly the same or different, if different, then the restore to other server may not work and the server may fail to boot, you may have to a do a repair install to fix drivers etc.

You have a golden opportunity to start fresh with new hardware and os install and you want to bloody it up by 'restoring' from your current setup? (i am making chicken noises over here). it is not that long/hard to reinstall stuff and if you are worried you don't know how or don't have everything you need that is a big red flag to stop and find out now...
anyhow to answer your question, did you see this:
"How to move a Windows 2000 installation to different hardware", 249694, mskb article from support.microsoft.com
think you will also want this one: 292175 How to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000
guess what will learn your way is pretty good too...just think you are about to open a can of worms...
