Restore files from another computer.

By jbonin ·
I had Vista Business installed on my laptop with an 80Gb drive. I did a complete backup and several weekly scheduled backups on a 200Gb USB external drive. The 80Gb hard drive failed. I installed a 30Gb drive, installed Vista Business and tried to restore some files from the backup. The restore failed. I tried to restore a single folder and that failed.

What am I doing wrong?

Try to use the Backup Drive on an XP Computer

And then transfer the data across a LAN to the Vista computer.

For Vista to read an external Drive it needs to format it and that is each install of Vista so when you had the HDD Fail the new copy of Vista is unable to read the backup drive.

Don't ask why it's just the way that things are.

It sounds like you said to attach the USB drive to an XP system, restore the folder to the XP drive, copy the folder to a thumb drive, copy the thumb drive to the Vista drive.

Think that'll work?

With Vista it's your best option

You may need to look at a different Backup or DR Plan for future use as this is a known problem with Vista so you'll need something that can be read by any Vista Computer which seems to rule out HDD at the moment.
