Restoring a Mailbox or a deleted mail

    Locked

    by singhjunk ·

I am using backup exec 7.3 to backup my Exchange Server. One of my user malbox is corrupted and I need to restore the mailbox from tape or lets say that I need to restore one paticular mailbox. Since I have Exhange Agent from Backup exec, I tried restoring it However, when I tried to expand the Private folder under Store Information, I cannot do so and I can’t see any of the mailboxes. I’ve checked the backup job and all mailboxes are suppose to be backup daily. Any ideas what is the problem?
Also , Is there anyway I can restore any way to restore permanant deleted e-mail from a particular mailbox using the backup-exec. And I guess it would be only possible if I see the mailboxes when I choose restore option.

    Thanks
    Jasjeet Singh

Neither Backup Exec or NT Backup support a single mailbox restore – you can only restore the entire information store as of the moment of backup.

The recommended single-box restore procedure involves building another off-line server with the samename and Exchange service account and password as the server that the backup came from.

You then restore the entire information store to this off-line server, log on to the mailbox you want and archive its contents to a *.pst file. You can then transfer that *.pst file to the regular server and have the mailbox user import it into their mailbox. It works well although it does take some time and you have to have a spare server and workstation.

If you need more information on the specificprocedure, please write and I can point you in the right direction.

I will need more details regarding your answer although it looks good. Another question that comes up here is that does the other backup exchange server needs to have the exact kind of Backup tape drive as on the primary server. Plus how can I have two machines with the same name on the network.

        Thanks

      Hi Jasjeet,

You could switch to Arcserve IT which has a brick level back up for Exchange.

It is very bad you don’t read what the author said:
he has veritas backup exec agent.

The problem is that he doesn’t know/never checked it. too bad 🙁

Before running to the tape backup solution:
If you are using excachange 5.5 and outlook 98 or 2000, u can try restoring item removed from
      the deleted item.
it is : tools->recover deleted items.

It still it doesn’t help, be sure to specificy
the exchange service account in “securiy” in
      backup exec.
There are two method of exchange back up:
store (like ntbackup or veritas with no agent).
      brick level(which u have).
the second option is great: u can restore a single mailbox in 5 minutes.
if the second method doesn’t work for you,
it is a BIG problem to run disaster recovery.
as others said, u need a second server and an experianced exchange administrator.

      anyway…
backup without check it no backup.

      Mark.

I made sure that I had service account in security but still I couldn’t see the single mailbox which I wanted to restore. Anyway can you e-mail me a little bit more detail about this plus I didn’t find the option you so called as : tools->recover deleted items.

        Thanks
