Restoring backup

By bsmith9510 ·
I have a E1705 with XP pro. I did a complete backup of everything on it using the backup utility that comes with windows(1st problem maybe?). The problem is that when i tried to restore this backup the computer would start to boot then flash a quick blue screen then reboot again. Won't boot in safe mode either. So I figured I could do a clean install and then restore from there. All goes well, untill it reboots again. Wouldn't you know, didnt work. I was wondering if anyone knows exactly how I am supposed to be using the backup utility to restore the drive. I figure I am using the wrong parameters.

Defiantly not the Windows Backup Application.

It will backup all your data but when it is restored Will Not give you a Bootable HDD to work or boot from. Now for your data you can recover it but don't allow it to write to the Boot Sector of the HDD make it restore to a Temp Folder on the HDD and then recover your data from there. You may need to take ownership of the files by following the directions here

If you encrypted the files you will be in deep trouble as you'll most likely be unable to recover the Encryption Key but I'll give you a link to how you should recover the Encryption Key just in case you can access the Key

Now for a proper Image you need a third party program like Ghost or something similar which will allow you to either Clone the HDD or make an Image of the drive in question and more importantly allow it to be a Bootable Drive when you recover the Image or load another HDD with a Clone of the original drive on it.
