Restoring Exchange 5.5 files

By kkrien ·
I had a NT 4.0 server installion corrupted beyond repair and installed W2K back. My most current backup of exchange 5.5 is on the mirrored drive. I've tried copying data files to the new exchange 5.5 directories with no success. Can anyone tell me if I can move files from the old exchange on the mirrored drive to the new install.

Restoring Exchange 5.5 files

I am not sure this will work becuase Exchange 5.5 is very fussy about how you restore files. There is a whole process involved in restoring Exchange 5.5 beyond the mere copying of files.

Why don't you reinstall NT4 with the same config as the original server (or as close as possible). Install the mirrored drive and do a proper restore.

What process did you use to do the backup, was this a proper backup or did you just copy files? Use the same to restore.
Let me know if you want to godown this route and I can give some useful tips.

I may have to resport to reinstalling NT4, but I was hoping to avoid it. The data I'd like to restore isn't from a backup...it's just the Exchsrvr directory on the mirrored drive. I was hoping I could just move the data files back to my new install.

The only files you will want from your old Exchange server is the priv.edb, pub.edb.
If you have a copy of the SAM (ie can use the same SID's) then you can grab the dir.edb also.
If this is a fresh installation of AD and you were not able to upgrade from your NT4 SAM- Do this
Install Exchange5.5 with the same Organization Name, Site Name, and SERVER name. Apply the Service Pack your old server was at.
Stop the information Store. Copy your priv and pub to your MDBDATA folder. Delete all of your transaction logs (especially edb.log)
Run isinteg -patch
Start the IS.
Now run a DS/IS consistancy adjuster. (to do this, open Exchange Admin, browse to the server name and select properties. On the Advanced tab, click Consistency Adjuster. Check all the boxes and let it run.) This will restore your Exchange directory (except distribution lists). You will also need to match mailboxes with NT/AD accounts.
