Restricted Access Hours

By Al Z ·
In a Peer-to-Peer network in a SOHO environment using Win XP Pro and need to be able to restrict hours of access (not before 8am or after 6pm). How can this be done locally?

This can only be done with a domain-level security policy. You cannot enforce restrictions in logon hours in a workgroup, since all policies are local to the machine.

As BFilmFan said you can not do this in Windows. But you can do it by putting the modem on a timmer and setting the timer to switch off just after 6.00 PM and back on just before 8.00 AM.

Of course for this to work all the computers would need to be sharing the same modem and it would be better if it was not in an easily accessable place, but hidden in a area with the phone connections has always worked for me but short of gluiging the plugs in there is no garantee that the timer can not just be unpluged and even if that isn't a problem you'll need to reset it everytime after a power outage unless you go for one of the battery backed ones but from previous experience they don't last as long as the other type. It will also give you problems if someone needs to work back late durring Stocktake and the like as well.
