Restricting IE usage

By bill_p ·
How to restrict Internet Explorer 5.X users to viewing home page only? We have a few training computers in production areas. We would like to allow employees to check on their 401K accounts but not be able to go anywhere else.

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Content, and under Content Advisory, select enable. Under the approved sites tab, you can select the URL's that you want users to access. Once you password protect it, users will be prompted fora password if they try to access other URL's that are no approved.

The problem is that once on site the user cannot migrate around the site. Such as logging on to their respective accounts.

another option may be using surfcontrol scout.
You will be able to restrict access via the server and you won't have to go to the pc's individually to make changes (restrict/ and unrestrict later again) also you will be able to create all kinds of reports based on the usage/when and where the people went.
there are other products too, since you have a network I would suggest to manage it from a network point of view instead of going on by one through the individual pc's.

Leopold

We have been using superscout to restrict access to porn, gambling, games etc... Thanks for the tip. We are now using it to restrict individual machines to one site only and they can migrate around that one site.
