We have a DSL service on the internet at our school and we would like to know if there is a way to restrict the times of access to the internet in some rooms in the school and alow unlimited time access in others. We want students to be able to access the internet only at times that teachers are present to monitor their activities. The computers are connected by network neighborhood and by Novell 5.1.

What type of security devices do you have in place between the dedicated connection and the rest of your network? If you are using something like a proxy server you can restrict by IP. How many PCs are we talking about? I would need some more specific information about the network so that I can give you more specific information. I would like to know how the network is set up such as are you using switches, hubs, routers and if so who is the manufactuer?

We have about 90 computers on the netework. They log onto Client For Microsoft Networks and Novell simaltaneously. All the computers plug into hubs and switches. The DSL Modem plugs into a Router. I am just a novice at networks and don’t know if what I am saying here makes any sense or not. In talking to the person here who is responsible for our network this is the description I got. He thinks we will need Border Manager running on a seperate computer to begin with but is not sure how we could time restrict computers in one room and not in all of them.

How do you have authentication set up within the network? Do you have account for just the PC or does everyone who uses the network have a username & password? What do you have implamented as a firewall?

Everyone who uses the network logs on with their user name and password which is neccessary for a school as students don’t always have access to the same computers. Don’t worry about how we are setup maybe we could change this. But what I want tobe able to accomplish is have students be able to log in to computers in any school room and have access to their network folder. There are some computers in areas where students can be in unsupervised where I would like to be able to restrict the times they can surf the internet but not neccessarily the times they can use the computer for other purposes. I prefer supervision to internet filtering.

I don’t know off of the top of my head anything native that would allow you to do what you would like to accomplish. I do know of a software solution that will allow you to do a very effective job of controlling Internet Access. The name of the program is called SuperScout Web Filter. You can control Internet access by time, hardware address, IP address, filter out a number of Internet sites, etc. Take a look at for details on the product.

I don’t want a filter and want students to be supervised so they can learn in the classroom how to surf an unfiltered web safely but not be able to use the web unsupervised.

Are you only trying to restrict access to the Internet or the entire domain?

Hi,
I have an ISP, and sell internet prepaid cards. I also need to know how to restrict times, and when cards (in your case students) can have access to the internet. I am having my people in Manila make a script or program to do exactly like whatyou are saying. It will cost about $1000.00, but I will let you have it for free. I will give you the snapshots.
