returned mail: Too many hops!

By c.delosreyes ·
Hello again people!

We're trying to send an e-mail to a specific individual but the mail keeps on returning with the following message:

Returned mail:
too many hops 18 (17 max):
from <source@domain.com> via localhost,
to <destination_user@domain.com>

we cannot send e-mail to that user as well as everybody in their domain. The funny thing here is that they can send e-mail to us without any problem.

What could be the cause of this, any ideas?

Thanks!

Chris

You could be using an incorrdct domain name for these recipients or their system is not properly configured to receive mail.

Can they receive from anyone else?

This is typically caused by a so-called "mail loop" and there is nothing you can do about it directly. It happens when a site's DNS mail records, the MX records are messed up so that incoming mail is bounced back and forth between the sites backup mail servers until it times out with the too many hops message.

Phone the individual, and ask them to notify their network admin or mail admin.

Good luck.

Another explanation, as I think of it, is that the maximum hop count on YOUR mail server is set too low. Given today's internet, 30 hops is more reasonable. Talk to your mail admin, and have them do a traceroute to the target mail host. If it takes more than 17 hops to get there, you have found the problem.

The answer given by "Stillatit" dated 07/02/01 01:26 PM EDT is the one really solved the problem.

Thnk you very much "Stillatit" after incresing the previously 17hops max to 30, the error message has not been seen after that.

Thanks for the big help again and have a very nice day!!
