Reverse number lookup

Until recently when I was unsure what telephone number was associated with a particular jack I could pull a phone into the jack and dial 8-1-1. A recording would then tell me the associated number. This does not work now. My facility is in Washington DC and uses Verizon as our local dialtone carrier. Does anyone know of an alternate method for discovering the number associated with an outlet.
