Revoking individual TS client licenses

By lmayeda ·
We have a W2K Terminal server hosting several companies with about a dozen remote TS clients. We have since split the companies into 2 independent networks each with its own W2k Terminal Server. The number of remote TS clients is increasing and many who were connecting to the original TS is now connecting to the new TS. My question is, how do you move or revoke the TS licenses from one TS to the other? I see on the TS Licensing program that my new users are close to the 90 day temporary license expiration date, and the ones with permanent licenses do not need them. Thanks in advance

Revoking individual TS client licenses

I have a few Technet articles for you to read about TS and licencing. First off, start here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/columns/profwin/pw0601.asp
(please remove any spaces)

It talks about how licencing works with a TS licencing server.I think you need to read this over. Based off your question, you are having a few problems. The users with the licences that expire after 90 days are only using temporary licences, not full ones. So, your licence server did not issue them full licenses, I think. So, read over the article on how this all works.

It ends with some really useful links to Technet articles on TS licencing. Two really useful ones are:

How to Reset the License Information in Terminal Server License Manager
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q201371

and

How to Transfer Terminal Services CAL from One Computer to Another
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q248430

hope this helps

Really simple. Call microsoft at 888-571-2048. Tell them then number of users no longer connecting to your terminal server and they will issue you new licenses. Make sure you have your licensing paper work, they use this to verify your request. The operator could care less as to why you need them. They will read you a key code you have to input into your Terminal Server Licensing manager. Thats it.

That's what I ended up doing. The license manager still looks weird because licenses are tied up with the original users but at least the new users are able to log on. I'm told thats what it will look like until I upgrade to SP3. Thanks

By my understanding as long as SP3 was installed prior to issue of the licenses the TSCALs should automatically be revoked at between 52 and 90 days of non connection to the server for each client.

Am not at SP3 so any old licenses/new licenses have to be "refreshed" by calling Microsoft as per Answer 2.
