I?m new to linux so I appreciate patience as well as detail in your responses.
I recently dual-booted my Compaq Presario 2100 with WinXP Pro and RH 9 Pro (I chose to install all packages). Grub is controlling the boot up, no problems there.
When RH attempts to load ?X server? I get the following message? ?I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?? (When Iinstalled I believe I chose ?Generic Laptop Display 1024 x 768) Linux also recognizes my video card correctly as the ATI Radeon U1.
When I click ?yes? to the above message it reads (after all the info about which version I have of linux, X, etc)?
?(= =) Log file: ?/var/log/Xfree86.0.log?, Time: Fri Jul 25 13:47:40 2003
(= = ) Using config file: ?/etc/X11/XF86Config?
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found?
Then I click ?exit? and get? ?Would you like me to try to run the X configuration program? Note that you will need the root password for this.?
I click ?yes?, log in as root, and it says? ?ddcprobe returned bogus values:? (every probe value just says ?none.? And then it says ?trying with card: ATI Radeon Mobility U1? and the message pops up? ?I will now try to restart the X server again?
I click ?Ok? and after a few failed attempts I end up back at the first error message of linux being unable to start the X server.
If I click ?no? through all the dialogues, I get ?I will disable this X server for now. Restart GDM when it is configured correctly? and I click ?Ok? and get to a bash prompt.
Any help and guidance is strongly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben Snyder
