Right-click to copy and paste

By bluenavy ·
I am running WINXP PRO SP3 and a program I installed has disabled right-clicking within the program, effectively preventing me from copying text that I generate in the program and pasting it into a Word file. Is there a way to enable the right-click function? Thank you.

Rick

What's the program?

Does it have a set-up or options menu, that may have mapped the right-click to other functions?

Do keyboard shortcuts work?

by NickNielsen In reply to Right-click to copy and p ...

Ctrl-A to select all
Ctrl-C to copy
Ctrl-X to cut
Ctrl-V to paste
Ctrl-P to print

These shortcuts are almost universally available in today's software. Very few applications do not support these shortcuts.

Still doesn't work

by bluenavy In reply to Right-click to copy and p ...

First, thank you to Palmetto and NickNielsen for responding to my post. Sorry, I did not reply sooner. It won't happen again. (You don't want to hear my troubles.)

I should have explained this in my original post but I did not. The program is an exam preparation software program delivered on a CD-ROM. I installed it on my pc. It delivers about 700 questions, one at a time. The user is presented a question, then selects radio button A,B,C or D and then clicks the SUBMIT button. If user selects an incorrect answer, a detailed response is presented. (If user selects correct answer, is says "correct.")

I would like to be able to prepare a study document by cutting and pasting each question and related correct answer into a Word document.

When I highlight question or answer text with left-click, then right-click, then left-click on Copy (or press Control-C), the highlighted text is no longer highlighted and a pointer appears in the middle of the text. I cannot get it to copy the text so I can paste it into the Word file. The program does not have a set-up or options menu.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Can't help you there

by NickNielsen In reply to Still doesn't work

It sounds like the people who wrote the course software protected against just the thing you are trying to do. You might be able to use a screen capture utility to grab the question and answer, the use OCR software to convert the image to text. You could also type each question and answer out, directly into your document. You could search the web for "free xxx study guides", where xxx is the certification you are studying for.

Or, you could write out the question and answer in longhand. If you do, you probably won't have any problems with your test...

All this help, even though you got my name wrong...

Um....I know that

by bluenavy In reply to Right-click to copy and p ...

Thanks, Mr. NickNielsen, for your assistance here but please note:

1) "It sounds like the people who wrote the course software protected against just the thing you are trying to do." Yes, you are correct. This is the reason I'm trying to work around it.

2) Can you recommend the screen capture utility and the OCR software to convert the image to text? (I don't think it would work, however.)

3) "You could also type each question and answer out, directly into your document." This is the very thing I'm trying to avoid.

4) "You could search the web for 'free xxx study guides', where xxx is the certification you are studying for. I've already done this, thanks.

5) "Or, you could write out the question and answer in longhand." Again, I'm trying to avoid this. Please see 3), above.

6) All this help, even though you got my name wrong... Sorry if you feel I got your name wrong.

7) Thank you for your help though. Even if you have several typos in your response, I do appreciate the time you took to answer me.

Print Screen?

by unhappyuser In reply to Right-click to copy and p ...

You should be able to use keyboard shortcuts. If not, then you've got even bigger issues.

Can you go back to a restore point and reload the software properly?

Try the freeware program TurnItOn

by JackOfAllTech In reply to Right-click to copy and p ...

It usually allows you to turn on any window attributes that were turned off by the developer. Not sure if it will help in this case but.... It can be dangerous so be careful.

Update....no luck

by bluenavy In reply to Right-click to copy and p ...

Thank you EMD and JackOfAllTech but no go.

1) I can do screen prints but that won't help in cutting and pasting just the text into a Word document. The text that I need takes up a relatively small part of the screen. The rest of the screen is consumed by test statistics and the four answer selections. The software was installed properly.

2) Thanks but that TurnItOn freeware program scares me. I have a feeling I could do some series damage to my system if I use it.

Thanks anyway.
