RIS: Super slow motion loading

By Desktop Jinx ·
I have two RIS servers (test and live).

I have separate images for several different hardware platforms which use Intel PRO/100 cards (Compaq Armada M700, Compaq Deskpro 815e, Compaq iPAQ 815e, Compaq Evo D500 815e). Images are copied from Test to Live.

The newest Evo system takes over an hour to complete initial "copy files" setup, but only on the Live server. On the Test server (and all other platforms on both servers) it takes ten minutes.

If I have multiple versions of the same driver on my RIS server, how does BINL determine which to use during initial setup? If it were truly the one in the image chosen by the client, why would I see such a dramatic slowdown, and how can I fix it?

RIS: Super slow motion loading

Hi,

I don't have an exact answer to your question, but I can tell how we do it.
First of all we don't use RIPrep images - instead we have script based ones.
This gives following benefits - we use single WIN2K CD image with number of .sif files. All needed drivers are stored in single place (we use Compaqs also) and only one instance of eahc exists (path is scpecified in .sif file).
Software is installed silently via script (most of software have this ability, the ones that don't can be packaged to msi files with Winstall LE).
Finally user profiles are copied depending on choice on preinstallation RIS screens.
All of this gives a great flexibility when changes to image have to be done (just adding a line to batch when new software comes or edit the path to support new driver).
We came to this idea after having great problems with several same video drivers...

Good luck,
Vagab0nd

I don't use RIPrep images either. I use unattended setup with .sif files also. I have multiple images because the contents of $OEM$\$$ vary depending on the machine's purpose and destination. (Some images have over 250MB of software in $$ -- stuff which is readily scripted but not readily packaged in an .MSI.)

In any case, I've narrowed the problem down to any 815e client (i.e. Intel NIC) RIS-loaded from the Live server (a Compaq DL360). Doesn't matter what NIC drivers I'm using on either the client or the server, the problem persists. No trouble from my Deskpro test server or from a DL320 server we loaded yesterday for comparison testing.

I'm faced with the prospect of an 8-hour overnight reload of the DL360 for the fifth time in four months due to inexplicable BS like this. I'm about ready to kick it to the curb.
