RJ-45 won't plug in

By scott.kinkade ·
Why won't any RJ-45 plug into the NIC when I haven't had any problems with it before?

This happens a lot with some computer cases.

take the cover off

Loosen the screw holding the board in

plug the cable in

Tighten the screw.

If it's a new cable, make sure that it's not keyed. RJ-45 cables for special applications have tabs on the side.

If it's not clicking into place, try gently lifting up the tab on the top just a little bit. Or if you kicked the stupid computer, the card may have shifted and you'll have to readjust the card to allow the RJ-45 connector to fit in the slot properly.

It sounds like there is probably a small piece of something (maybe part of an connector) stuck inside port on the card. Maybe even a piece of a broken lock tab from when a cable was removed. Look very carefully. Otherwise you can remove the card and see if the connector will plug in with nothing around the card. Make sure one of the wires in the card is not bent.
