Roaming profile alternative

By mg_roberts ·
Ok, so I've been here before asking about roaming profile solutions. Now it just seems like they aren't capable of doing what we want. When laptop users are out of the office working for a few days and come back, all the files they changed/moved, go back to the original state they were at during the last time they were in the office. now our primary reason for using roaming profiles is to back up files.

asking a user to manually back up their files doesn't always go so well. especialy when some of these users are C level executives. so is there any way to automate the backup process of a users files when they are connected to the network? or should i just set a scheduled back up task and grab it from their computer while they are here?

my own resolution

I just wanted to post this incase anyone might have run into the same issue.

What I am now using is a free backup utility called SyncBack. I disabled roaming profiles and now use this tool to synchronize with the server. their profile obviously isn't available from other PCs but that was never really an issue. this application runs in the tray and can be set to run completely silent. its the best solution i've come up with.

Another solution

What about using folder redirection and offline files? That way you could have users sync when they got back into the office.
