Roaming profiles

If I set up roaming profiles on our network, does each computer need all the same software. I mean if I am using a roaming profile and I use Office 2000 and I log in to a computer without Windows 2000 can this work. (these would be Windows 2000 Pro work stations on a Win NT 4.0 Network) Also would roaming profiles work on Win 2000 and win 98?
