Roaming Profiles for XP Pro

By philldmc ·
I am a computer teacher at a elementary/middle school. I like the ability to have desktop settings for all students that are the same. I have configured Win9x for this but now I want to go away from Win9x to WinXP Pro for the students to use. However I know that WinNT (any version) creates a different profile locally for each user. I don't want this. Too much configuring per profile. I want each student to have the exact same settings regardless of what computer they use in the computer lab.So here is my idea and I want to know if it will hold water. I am thinking of creating a mandatory roaming profile for students. I'll make on master profile and assign it to each student in AD and then make the profile mandatory so the student is unable to change it. If I'm correct each student, regardless of what system or if it is the first time they sign on that machine they will get the same desktop shortcutas, printers installed, IE configured, etc. for each user.

Is there another possible way?

Each student has a personal folder on the lab server so a common user name and password will not work for security of their personal folders.

Let me know.

Your idea should work, and since you have an AD you may also take a look at restrictions imposed with Group policy objects.

GPO's would give you better control and more flexibility. Anyway you should gather these users in an organizational unit to manage them.

Hey,

Using Group Policy is definately the way to go. You may want to look at the "folder redirection" option to configure different menus for different grades if their menus differ.
