Roaming Profiles not updating

By madbanker ·
I have setup a test roaming profile. It works, but it does not automatically update when I change my desktop, etc. The profile is setup on my PDC, and user manager for domains is setup to read the profile from the server. Any ideas on what could keep the profile from updating back to the server each time I make a change, then log off? My impression was it would update the profile stored on the server automatically.

Thanks for any help.

Firstly, check for time synchronisation between workstation and server - the profile will only upload if it is newer by timestamp.

Also, this is a known problem with some versions of the Novell client. It is, in technical terms, pants.

Also, if the connection is slow, it may fail the upload, but this is unlikley.

Hope this gives some clues!

Make sure that shared folder where the profile is stored is not set to "Read Only". Also, make sure that the extension on the profile is ".dat" not ".man".

If you have BDC(s) on the network, make sure that you are synchronizing properly - the user information may not be up to date on the server that handles the login. And, as above, make sure that you are using the appropriate extension on the profile datafile.

Oh yeah... make sure that you don't have other (machine-specific, etc.) profiles that are over-riding your user profile.

Make sure that you don't have a mandatory profile conflict. A previously existing profile can overwrite any changes. Here is what to do:
1. Make sure you have Change permission on the drive that stores your profiles on the PDC.
2. Delete the locally stored profile on your workstation. (You want to make sure the previous profile, whether it's local or mandatory isn't overwriting the new roaming. I have had this happen to me, and you need to clean the machine of old profiles using the same user name.
3. Rename ntuser.man to booboo or .bak on the server. A new ntuser.dat will be created when you log on with the roaming profile.
Try changing your screen color before you do too much work on the desktop settings, then log off and logback on to verify that it is sticking.

I use roaming profiles and I have had everyone of these issues. Don't forget that if you log onto a different machine that stores your old profile, that could overwrite the roaming once again. Good luck.
