Root DNS server won't allow forwarding

By radem ·
My company internal DNS server that is closely integrated with the Active
Directory (win2K platform) will not allow forwarding as it is a root server.
I tried to setup another DNS server on our network but it became a root
server as well?
I needto setup forwarders as our internal DNS cannot resolve anything that
is outside our network, and having an outside DNS server from our ISP is not
ideal solution as it slows down local logons, resolutions etc. + it would
require manual DNS settingchange on each station (we have a static IP).
How can I setup another local DNS server that will not be a root server or
change the existing one so that it allows forwarding?

Thank you very much!

Rade

Root DNS server won't allow forwarding

Taken from Mr. DNS

>can i configure an internal root dns server (a fake root, who does

>real names and addresses of all local hosts, but will forward all
>other queries to a primary?

No. Roots and forwarding are mutually exclusive. A root believes it knows all legitimate top-level domains. Therefore, if you ask a root about any given domain name, it will either refer you to a name server that can answer the question or it will respond with NXDOMAIN (no such domain). It will not forward.

If you want your current Active directory Root dns server forward internet query to another Dns server, Yo must delete root domain ( . domain)on your Dns server . And configure another dns ip adres on forwarder tab in dns server properties . or nothing . Because Dns server is include cahce dns database. and it will forward internet domain query to internet root dns server.
But you must configure Your Domain Dns server computer with external dns server ip adress on (connected internet) network interface ip configuration.

Yup, this was it. I deleted the root folder (.) restarted the service and the forwarding was enabled. I entered the external DNS server IP an dnow it is resolving everything locally (fast) as well as externally.
Thank you!
