That's a really broad question, but I'll give it a shot;

Routers are used for:

Accessing computers on other subnets
Keeping unauthorized users from your network (doesn't always work)
DHCP (depending on the router)
Home networking
Network Address Translation firewall
Hardware firewall
Many more uses

What they are is even harder, as routers range from a stand alone (linksys for example) unit, to a computer (windows 2000 server for example) used to perform router functions. Usually a router is used to seperate/make accessable two subnets, or most commonly in home setups, between a cable/dsl modem and your computer. I don't have nearly enough time or space to get into details on this subject, but I hope I've given you an idea ortwo.
Another good resource, www.webopedia.com

Good luck!
Joe

Why don't you start from the begining? Do you understand how a computer works? Do you know HEX?
Or do you just want us to teach you everything we know in 1930 characters?
If you want to know something specific you are welcomed. But to teach you something, I don't think this is the right place. You can try an educational institution.
