Routing question

By jviola ·
I have XP beta 2 (advance server). I have two nics in. Nic 172.16.2.103 SM 255.255.0.0 GW 172.16.1.1 (this is an internal address to a router that connects to the internet) Nic #2 10.200.2.34 SM 255.255.0.0 GW None. I have computer connect to the 10.200.xxx.xxx subnet 10.200.9.44 SM 255.255.0.0 GW 10.200.2.34. Question: I can route to 172.16.2.xxx subnet, but not the 172.16.1.xxx. or any other subnet.

From the XP server I can route everywhere, but I can't from route through this server. I have routing and remote connection enabled as a router.

Help. Thanks.

Routing question

This is a little confusing, since your 172.16 subnets are both "class B" with 16-bit subnet masks. This means that 172.16.1 and 172.16.2 are on the same subnet. Later though, you say that you cannot reach the 172.16.2 but can reach the 172.16.1, leading me to believe that these are actually 24-bit subnets. To clear that up, check the subnet masks on all three devices to make sure they are consistent.

Otherwise, check the routing table of your 172.16.1.1 router to make sure that it has a static route set up to point to 172.16.2.103 in order to route to the 10.200 subnet.

Hope that helps,

I guess I did confuse you. 172.16.1.xxx and 172.16.2.xxx are on the same subnet, but I can only ping 172.16.2.xxx addresses. I have the subnet set as class B 255.255.0.0 on the XP server and the XP prof computer.

Any other ideas?

Lastly, (I forgot to add) don't forget to enable the dual-homed machine for routing!

I've already done that.
