RPC SERVER IS NOT AVAILABLE

By andrewras ·
I get an error message when trying to add a network printer to my workstation NT4, the RPC server is not available.
The printers that I already have addedd dissapear, re-booting seems to fix the problem but it has happened about 4 times now.

RPC server is a service which is why when you re-boot everything works again. Have you tried the latest service pack? Hope this helps.

Next time it happens look at the SPOOLER service in services. Normally what has happened is the SPOOLER service has stopped. Start the SPOOLER service will resolve the issue without rebooting.

The service stops because of issues with a printer not printing and jobs getting stuck in queue or excessively large print jobs.

As mentioned before this will be because of the print spooler.

As this has happened on more that one occasion, I think it would be prudent to delete your printers and spool files and reinstall all the printers as I think one of the printer drivers have become corrupt.

Basically this consists of stopping the spooler, deleting the spool files and drivers and then deleting the registry settings.
