RPC

By Orion92 ·
I have a xp home edition, the rpc keeps coming up and shutting down in 60 seconds. The problem is i went to the Services to locate the RPC service but the property is not coming up for me to disable it. Is there any other ways to get to it? Thanks in Advance.

BTW...I tried looking for the msblast.exe in the registry and couldn't find it. Giving the time it takes to do or find anything withing 60 sec, I can't even run a scan as well.

Boot with a boot disk (http://www.bootdisk.com) and then run the scan.

Sounds as if your system is heavily compormised.

sounds like blaster or something. can you turn on the xp firewall, then start in Safe Mode with Networking from the Startup Menu (a utility menu reached when you tap f8 on the keyboard during a cold restart of your pc), to to Windows Updates and do all critical updates, then go to a free online scanner such as housecall.trendmicro.com
if you have a persistent, reinfecting spyware you will have to download and install ad-aware se personal also use hijackthis and get some anti virus anti spyware on there such as norton internet security
the trick is to be off the internet and in safe mode to scan. also to have the latest definitions for all products. so lots of rebooting, connecting and disconnecting from the internet must go on...

Sorry I didn't mention it earlier, I went to safe mode and tried that as well, but surprised to see that it shows up and started the countdown. There's no way to get rid of this thing. Someone just informed me that I can go to run and type msconfig and try the selective startup or diagnostic startup. Hopefully that'll work and solve everything.

It does sound like a virus. As soon as you see the RPC countdown begin, click on "Start" then "Run" and type in "shutdown -a" without the quotes. Make sure to leave a space between the shutdown and -a. Then click OK. The countdown should stop and the system will not shut down. This will give you the time you need to work on the system/virus scan/whatever.
