RPClocator service error

By ehole ·
I have an NT 4 server which is a PDC running Exchange 5.5. Recently the server seemed to hit a brick wall and all services stopped responding. If you try and access the services from Control Panel or at Command level you just receive a stop error "the RPClocator service is unavailable.

The funny thing is when you boot the server you don't get any service failures.

The server does eveything extremely slowly, i.e logging on, opening explorer etc.

Thanks in advance
Evan

Is that PDC connected to the Internet? Scan it for viruses/trojans. Has this PDC ever crashed before? Check your event logs - it sounds like maybe/possibly a BDC was promoted to PDC. I've seen RPC crap out when two servers in a domain are tryingto both function as PDC. Also, are you running WINS on that PDC? If so, flush your WINS database - excessive duplicate entries in your WINS database can bring a server(s) to its knees because it is spending all its time with name resolution.

HTH & Good luck!
